The handing of a door refers to the direction that the door swings when opened. You can use the position of the hinges and the location of the handle or knob to help you determine handing. In this article, we'll go over the steps to determine the handing of a door.

Step 1: Stand on the outside of the door

Step 2: Determine whether the door is in-swing or out-swing

Standing on the outside of the door, open the door. If you push the door to open it, the door is an in-swing door. If you pull the door to open it, it’s out-swing.

Step 3: Determine the handle and hinge locations

While continuing to stand on the outside of the door, the next step is to determine the location of the handle (lever or knob) and the hinges.

  • If the hinges are on the left and the handle is on the right and you push the door open, the door is a left-hand door.

  • If the hinges are on the right and the handle is on the left and you push the door open, the door is a right-hand door.

  • If the hinges are on the left and the handle is on the right and you pull the door open, the door is a right-hand reverse door.

  • If the hinges are on the right and the handle is on the left and you pull the door open, the door is a left-hand reverse door.
